Josh Davis is the first student from Lufkin to win $5,000 at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo auction painting called “The Morning Gathering” which was originally a photo of chickens.

“It took about two months to draw and paint “The Morning Gathering,” the junior said. “I went by the photo, but I accentuated some colors.”

Davis’s main challenge in creating “The Morning Gathering” came not from drawing the picture but from painting it.

“Sketching out the picture was the easiest part,” Davis said. “The challenge was mixing colors together to produce a different kind of tone and texture.”

Chrissy Tate, an art collector from Houston, won Davis’s “Morning Gathering” painting with a bid of $5,000.

“I was really excited when she bid $5,000 because it all came to me as a surprise,” Davis said.

Davis said that he has always been in love with art since he was a kid.

“I was born with an interest of art,” Davis said. “I have always been in love with art because it is another way I can express myself.”

Davis has won a Gold Medal and seven Best of Shows throughout art competitions and plans to keep competing in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

“I plan on competing in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo next year and every other year after that,” Davis said.
