The Frozen plot was introduced at the end of the third season. The shows executive producers explained that Disney had not asked them to do a crossover for the film. The producers fell in love with Frozen when it premiered last November. They watched the movie three more times then developed a story idea in February and successfully pitched it to the ABC Studios, the ABC network, and the Disney brand management.

The producers shared that their writer’s room, was basically a Frozen appreciation room and they would be “completely honored” if the original stars wanted to replay their roles. Producer Adam Horowitz said they were not going to redo the film.

“We’re very aware of what we think makes this character from ‘Frozen’ so special and we want to honor that and make sure that we do is in the universe of what everyone fell in love with this past year.” Horowitz said.

The premiere had many positive reviews from critics, with most complementing the new characters. Amy Ratcliffe of IGN rated the episode 8 out of 10, signifying positive reviews.

“The season four premiere of Once showed the addition of Anna and Elsa works for the series,” said Ratcliffe, “but it did more than focus on the sisters. Regina and Rumple both took strides forward, and that sends the signal that the front half of the season won’t be all Frozen all the time-unlike the trip to Neverland last year.”

The premiere was watched by 9.47 million viewers and attained an 18-49 rating of 3.5. this marks a significant increase in viewers and ratings from the previous season premiere.

With the first half of the season coming to an end, ABC announced that the next half will have Maleficent as the main villain.
