Lufkin High School has its own barbecue team now.

Agriculture teacher Kellye Marshall approached Audio/Visual/Multimedia teacher Mike McHaney about the idea of a barbecue team.

“I attended an ag conference, and it was a class you can learn about new offerings — and the barbecue team was one of them,” Marshall said.

McHaney held tryouts for the team, and six students — Tanner Adams, Garin Ashby, Anthony Austin, Serenity King, Kalen Park and Victoria Steptoe  — were selected to cook. Adams is the team’s president, and Ashby is the vice president.

The team is using American State Bank’s grill. This week, the team made barbecue plates for an LHS Theatre fundraiser.

The team will cook brisket and chicken at competitions against teams from other schools, beginning with its first competition on Nov. 8. The team must finish in the top 10 of schools in its region to reach the state barbecue championship.

“Hopefully we go to state with it,” McHaney said.
