With a new year come new beginnings.

Daniel Usher, Lead Student Council sponsor

Lufkin High School’s longtime Student Council sponsor, Patricia White, retired last year. The school hired Zachary Allen as an Assistant Principal of Student Activities and made government teacher Daniel Usher the lead sponsor for Student Council.

In addition, each grade level will now have two Student Council sponsors:

  • Seniors — Brittany Sanchez (W-215) and Robert Inman (S-211)
  • Juniors — Tarska Duffield (C-210) and Morgan Crain (W-136)
  • Sophomores — Jennifer Tarbutton (W-244) and Alycia Bowling (S-107)
  • Freshmen — Catherine Adams (W-228) and Kacey Segura (W-212)

With the many new sponsors, the school hopes for the student organization to grow.

“We’re kind of restarting, so I’d like to get a new structure and get off the ground,” Usher said. “My main goal is to get more involved in the community, do more community service and have some type of give-back programs.”

Usher said there will be more changes coming for the Student Council.

“I’d like to say it’ll be more strict than it has been in the past years — especially for the officers,” he said. “We’ve come up with a points system, which will require some amount of community service every nine weeks, and you’ll have to maintain an average of 80 in all your classes.”

He said he’s especially excited about the program because of the new group of sponsors.

Any student interested in joining the Student Council is encouraged to visit any of the grade-level sponsors. The membership fee is $10.
