The COVID-19 outbreak has affected many Lufkin High School organizations this year, including the Panther Pride drill team.

Panther Pride Director Johnna Walker said the drill team has made several adaptations to help try to make the school year as normal as possible, while also protecting the team members from spreading any illnesses.

“We are social distancing at all times, wearing a mask, and we have also created a new dressing area that allows us to space out while getting ready,” she said. “Also, we are not hooking up while kicking or touching during dances, and not sharing poms or props.”

A major change the team has had to face is the University Interscholastic League’s new 50% capacity rule that will prevent the Panther Pride from attending out-of-town games. The Panthers’ football season — which begins with a road game on Sept. 25 and the first home game on Oct. 2 — will be different, but Walker said the members of Panther Pride are keeping a positive outlook.

“I think it will be good, but different,” she said. “Although we will miss out-of-town games and bus trips, I’m excited and glad that we get some type of football season at all, considering the circumstances with COVID-19.”

While the Panther Pride’s annual Christmas Spectacular show and Spring Show are months away, the team has already begun preparing for them. Walker said the Panther Pride plans to have a normal show with a “spaced-out” audience.

“These are my favorites, and I’m looking forward to having them,” she said. “Lufkin has lots of wonderful traditions, and as a team we miss them.”
