Lufkin High School Theatre Director William Odom encourages people to attend the musical comedy The Addams Family this week for a laugh of familiarity.

“The family has always been funny, and nothing has changed,” Odom said. “Grandmama’s still messing with her potions, and Pugsley is still being tortured by Wednesday. They are still hilarious.”

The LHS Theatre students will present the play at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, then 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, in the Tom Jack Lucas Auditorium. General admission tickets are $5 each.

In this version of the play, an of-age Wednesday is worried about her unusual family meeting the parents of her boyfriend, Lucas.

“She tries to get her family to act normal,” Odom said. “It goes bad, so now they have to try and fix it because of their secret engagement.”

Odom said Fine Arts teacher Debbie Garrett and her students have worked tirelessly on the building the set.

“It’s as big as our last set for ‘Comic in the House,’” Odom said. “We have multiple little sets that will come on and off for the changes in location.”

This musical is replacing the Christmas play this year because it generates growth in the theater program, Odom said.

“We didn’t touch on the holiday aspect of it because we wanted to get as many kids as possible involved,” he said. “By doing that, we had to have a big cast show.”

The cast includes 23 roles. Phillip Callaway (Uncle Fester), Emma Carlile (Morticia), Graham Childers (Mal Beineke), Katelyn Clifton (Alice Beineke), Nick Hargroue (Lurch), Alex Hill (Lucas Beineke), Caroline McDaniel (Pugsley), Tolu O’jori (Gomez), Olivia Soule (Wednesday) and Lena Tate (Grandmama) acting as the main characters.

“They’ve worked hard on this musical,” Odom said. “It’s been a lot, but I’m confident about it.”
