The construction of Lufkin High School’s new gym and baseball/softball fields should break ground within the next few months, according to Principal Brandon Boyd.

When the construction is finished, LHS students and coaches will no longer have to travel to Morris Frank Park or the Lufkin Middle School to play their home games.

The gym will be behind the scoreboard of Abe Martin Stadium and will be  able to hold more than 2,000 people, Boyd said. The gym will have state-of-the-art equipment and will be one of the most modern athletic facilities around East Texas, he said.

All of Lufkin High School’s varsity gymnasium sports are played at Panther Gymnasium on the Lufkin Middle School campus. The new gym will make a huge impact on how many more students and facilty will go the games, since it will be on the high school campus, Boyd said.

The Panthers baseball team and Lady Panthers softball team play all their home games at Morris Frank Park. The new baseball and softball fields will be completely artifical turf, Boyd said. The two fields will be located close together, allowing for a better viewing experience, he said.
