MY OPINION: Open letter to everyone
April 1, 2020
An open letter to whosoever chooses to read this:
To everybody who keeps saying that it’s “not that bad” that we are losing our senior year, please stop. You haven’t ever gone through anything like this.
This is a pandemic. There is no one to blame. Could certain people all over the world have helped to slow the spread? Yes, of course. Could certain people have prevented this outbreak altogether? I would say that is incredibly unlikely. But alas, here we are.
School is canceled from March 6 to May 4. Therefore, we seniors will have a maximum of two more weeks of school. And that will only be the case if no more school is canceled. Thus, the chances of us going back to school are bleak at best, as this disease is only infecting more and more people daily.
The class of 2020 will likely not have a senior prom. Has it been cancelled? No, but I would say the likelihood is high. For now, it’s postponed indefinitely.
More importantly than the prom, though, is the thought of missing out on our graduation. Just the other day, my mom pointed out to me that most of this year’s seniors were born in the months following the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, which was the last time the entire world stopped. How fitting that we were brought into the world with everything closed, and now we might not even graduate because once again, the whole world is closed.
If you know me, I don’t like to beat around the bush. It’s not fair. I am greatly troubled. I’m not sure if you realize it yet, but most of us will never see each other again. It has been said many times in many places in many circumstances by many people that you do not truly appreciate what you had until it is taken away from you.
I hope and pray that we go back to school, but if we do not, I am trying to prepare myself for that unfortunate occurrence.
I hope everybody reading this is safe and healthy. Until I see you all again, Godspeed and God Bless.
Will
