Lufkin High School’s volleyball team is bigger than it’s been in a while and is ready to compete, according to Head Coach Leah Flores.

“We have a full squad, which is the most we’ve had, along with good depth on the bench and plenty of girls ready to sub in if someone is not doing their job on the court,” she said.

Members of the 2019-20 LHS varsity squad include Catera Brown, Victoria Concha, Kelby Coutee, Natalie Cox, Kaylen Davis, Lexxi Freeman, Libby Flores, Stefani Hernandez, Reagan Hill, Bree Hodges, Mia Lila, Courtnee Morgan, Aleah Park and Claire Watlers.

Flores said the team has been working hard to prepare for the season.

“We have to have intense practices every day, so that everybody can be ready to go into battle,” she said.

Flores said Hallsville looks like the team to beat in the Lady Panthers’ district. She said the Lady Pack and Whitehouse also should compete for the district title, and that Marshall and John Tyler are going to be “better than last year.”

Last year, Lindale knocked Lufkin out of the playoffs in the first round, Flores’ young team — which includes several freshmen — hopes to improve on that this year.

This week, the Lady Panthers have two road matches — at Magnolia at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and at Nacogdoches at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
