Making a statement that things are going to be different this year, the Pack Soccer team defeated the Woodlands Highlanders for the first time. The Panthers scored first en route to the 2-1 win.

Sophomore Elias Aguliar put the Pack on the board first with a penalty kick that fooled the Highlander goal keeper by placing in the middle of the net.

“It meant a lot to me knowing that I scored the first goal,” Aguliar said. “I was very ecstatic.”

The Woodlands tied the score three minutes later with a penalty kick, and that is how the first half ended, 1-1.

Lufkin got its second goal early in the second half on a back post shot from senior Javier Escobedo.

“We have a great defense,” Escobedo said. “They passed to midfielders and Elias kicked the ball to Jordan (Thompson) who passed it to me and I cut shot into  back post”

The whole team is very happy that they finally got to beat the Woodlands for the first time ever.

“Everyone around here gets fired up about beating the Woodlands in anything,” Coach Shaw said. “I’m glad we could contribute to that.”

This puts Lufkin in a tie at first, but they still have a long way to go.

“The one thing we need to do different, and it’s a tough thing, is to put more balls in the back of the net,” Shaw said.
