This Week in LP Sports: Several LHS squads in action
October 28, 2019

Today, the girls golf team competes at the Grand Oaks Invitational in Spring. The boys JV golf team is at the Lake Creek Invitational in Montgomery. The cross country team is at the regional meet in Grand Prairie and seeks to advance to the state meet for the second straight year.
On Tuesday, the volleyball teams host Whitehouse on Senior Night. The JV and freshman squads compete at 5 p.m., with the varsity team to follow at 6.
There are no sporting events scheduled for Wednesday or Thursday.
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Lufkin Panthers seek to win their second straight District 8-5A football championship. After shelling playoff-bound Magnolia West last week 52-7, the Pack has clinched a playoff berth for the 22nd year in a row. Lufkin travels to Conroe to play the Caney Creek Panthers this week. Entering the contest, Caney Creek is 2-6 overall and 1-4 in district play. Their only district win came last week against the Waller Bulldogs, in a 41-40 nail-biter. Lufkin enters 7-1 overall, 5-0 in district. In last year’s matchup at Abe Martin Stadium, our Panthers beat their Panthers 63-0. Lufkin led that game 42-0 at the end of the first quarter and held Caney Creek to 48 yards of total offense throughout the contest. The Pack looks to clinch the district title with a win Friday night.
On Saturday morning, the swim team hosts its annual Lufkin Invitational meet at 9 a.m.
At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the Panther Band performs at the NAMMB State Military Marching contest. The Marching Outlaws were narrowly ranked second to Lindale in last year’s contest after four consecutive state titles and look to return to the mountaintop this year. The contest will be held in Stephen F. Austin’s Homer Bryce Stadium.
