On Tuesday, the Lufkin High School volleyball teams go on the road to play the John Tyler Lady Lions. The JV and freshman teams play at 5 p.m., and the varsity team follows at 6.

After an off day Wednesday, the Pack is back on Thursday. The cross country team travels to Jacksonville for the District 16-5A meet. The other district schools are Hallsville, Jacksonville, Pine Tree, Marshall, Nacogdoches, John Tyler and Whitehouse. Lufkin’s team looks to take the first step on the road back to the state meet, for which it qualified last year.

On Friday, the volleyball girls travel to Marshall to play the Lady Mavericks. The varsity game is at 4:30 p.m., and the JV and freshman contests are at 5:30.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Lufkin football Panthers, fresh off a significant 31-21 win over the College Station Cougars, kick off their road game against the Tomball Cougars, who won at Waller last week by a nearly identical score of 30-21. In last year’s meeting, the Pack beat Tomball at Abe Martin Stadium 35-24. Entering the contest in Tomball, Lufkin is 5-1 and Tomball is 3-3. Fun fact: District 8-5A has two teams named the Bulldogs, two teams named the Cougars, and two teams named the Panthers.

On Saturday, the cross country team hosts its Alumni Meet. There is no swim meet, as was previously reported.

Also on Saturday, the Panther Band will perform a precision military marching routine in the UIL Regional Marching Contest at Stephen F. Austin’s Homer Bryce Stadium. The Marching Outlaws of Abe perform at 8 p.m., looking to continue their streak of consecutive First Division ratings.
