10 Common Enemies That Are Seen In (Most) Video Games

Video Games are based around a goal. Granted, that goal can be just building the best city, castle, farm, etc. one can, but normally the goal is centered around a main villain and his lackeys. The villain can vary from game to game- though a franchise will mainly have the same kind of villain throughout its lifetime- but the henchman, lackeys, minions, whatever, will have things in common with other games. Even games that don’t have a main villain can still have enemies in common with another game. This is a list of 10 key common enemies that can be found pretty much no matter the game.

 10. Undead. This is being used as an umbrella term, as many MMOs will categorize any ghoul, ghost, moaning, groaning, wreak-havoc-on-the-living creatures as ‘Undead.” This term makes sense; however, as these are not dead and once were, but they aren’t alive, either. This is used with skeletons, zombies, ghosts, banshees, and things of the like.

9. Goblins. These, usually green, short, and sort of on the non-attractive side creatures can have a range of intellect- from the usual kill-first-ask-questions-later bandits that yell non-sensical battle cries, to the suave, crafty businessmen (and businesswomen) that are seen in games like World of Warcraft and other games. They usually all have the same goal- to steal money from others and gain more wealth. The methods that are used to attain said wealth growth can be from just trying to charge more for something and passing it off as better quality than other, cheaper things that are exactly like what they’re selling, or just ambushing and stealing gold.

8. Bands. Another umbrella term which includes the mob or mobs, packs, and warbands. Usually, it’s a pack of wolves or other enemy, a ‘brotherhood,’ so to say, of people fighting as a group (warband) that goes around 0n looting or killing adventurers, or the mob, which is self-explanatory- gun-firing, people shot kind of mob. They are usually harder to challenge, as it’s a group of people together, but usually offer better rewards once killed.

7. Dragons. A lot of popular games are fantasy/medieval-style anyway, and no fantasy/medieval-style, or even games like Pokemon, for that matter, are complete without a good, old-fashioned dragon. These can be full-on big, scaly, fire-breathing dragons to a dragon-humanoid hybrid. Dragons can also have varying goals- from wanting to shatter the world into pieces, such as Deathwing in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm or pretty much all dragons in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. They can also try to help stop the destruction of the world, such as the dragonflights in, again, World of Warcraft.

6. Soldiers. Whether good or bad, alive or dead, human or whatever, you tend to find these anywhere. They can be city guards or militia, working in public or with a secret agenda. These men usually carry armor and weapons, though can conceal armor under clothes, or even wear modern armor and use modern weapons, such as guns, sniper rifles, etc.. They fight to serve, protect, or overthrow a leader or group, and are usually tougher than other enemies. Friends to one are enemies to another, which is part of the fun in creating the character of an opposite faction to a player’s main one- to see their main faction’s guards’ and other soldiers’ AI fight.

5. Trolls. These can range just like goblins. They can go from being mindless, wandering brutes to cunning, mysterious dwellers to smart warriors and tacticians. They can be found in varying areas from caves, to damp places, to wide open spaces, to rudimentary cities, to capitals.

4. Henchman. No main villain would be complete without them- grunts and lackeys to do their dirty work. These are the people whom the main villain would manipulate – physically, emotionally, or mentally – to alter them to do what they are told. Some may be told there is something for them in a deal, or could just be as evil as their boss, but not quite as competent. They are usually found around their boss, and are harder than other enemies around them, though not as tough as their boss.

3. Mercenaries. Whether thieves, bounty hunters, or assassins, someone can find them in quite a few games. Thieves usually steal for themselves to earn a profit, or for someone that pays them, in hopes of a better reward the faster their mission’s accomplished. Bounty hunters are also hired, or just see a ‘Wanted’ poster and accept the challenge. They can be from cunning to ruthless, tidy in their job or messy, and also try to carry out a mission a fast as possible. Assassins can want some form of revenge on their target when they’re hired, or just doing it for money. They carry out their missions silently and leave their victims dead.

2. Cultists. Usually a cult or some other organization, these people usually have the same agenda – sacrifice someone, bring back someone/something or empower someone/something – try to use it to end the world or bring it to their standards. Players can have a hard time finding them, unless it’s a part of a story-line. In more modern games, it could just be another mob that is trying to appease a higher-up by taking out enemies. Either way- kill, gain power, use power for goals. Pretty simple plan, actually.

 1. Players. Yes, one of a player’s biggest and most common enemies is… other players. They usually are killed by players of another team, but can also be killed by their own teammates, if playing a game on a server that allows team damage. These are probably the most difficult enemies a player can have, as unlike AI, people can strategize and adapt strategies based on events. One person may be fighting another person and the latter is almost dead, when suddenly the latter heals himself back to full and kills the original player. Things like this is what can make players themselves more dangerous than any non-player character, or NPC.
